Namecheap is a pretty good registrar. As its name says, yes, it is usually pretty cheap. I would also like to point out that I personally have nothing bad to say about Namecheap and that their service is overall pretty positive. But as with most things, there occasionally comes time to make a change. This change happens to be to transfer a domain hosted at Namecheap.
Recently I have been moving most of my domains to Cloudflare, who don’t currently offer registrations but do offer to take the domains once registered.
Head over to https://ap.www.namecheap.com/domains/list/
Click the “Manage” button on the right.
Scroll down to the bottom:
Click on the “UNLOCK” link and then click the button marked “AUTH CODE”.
This will open a dialogue/modal window.
Fill in what fits best and click “Send Code”.
You will get an email that looks something like this:
Copy the “Authorization Code” to your new Domain Registrar.
Now all that is left to do is to approve the transfer from the NameCheap side of things.
You will receive another email that looks like this:
This is probably the worst written message I’ve seen in a while. Let’s break it down a bit.
“If you WANT TO PROCEED with the transfer, you do not need to respond to this message”
That clearly reads that to complete our transfer means that we can now consider it done.
If you WISH TO CANCEL the transfer, please go to our website”
That clearly reads that if we have made a mistake and would like to back out, then we should go to the website.
What is ACTUALLY MEANS, is that regardless of which option you would like to achieve, you better click that link. It turns out that once you’ve clicked that link you will be shown a blob of text asking if you would like to “Accept” or “Reject” the transfer.
Only once you have clicked “Accept” on that “website link”, will the domain transfer actually begin.
I pointed this out to Namecheap and they stated that “Unfortunately, we are not able to change the wording of the Form Of Authorization email at this moment, as such template is forced by ICANN“.
